<tr><td>Comment</td><td>So, click on the link to go to Wikipedia page, and come back here. I'll wait. (Sorry about any cross-site-scripting errors). Man, calling the Prelude "suffocation", or "What tears [are shed] from the depths of the damp monastery?" seems a bit much to me. I rather perfer to think of it as 'deep'. I didn't realize when I started practicing the piece that it was one of the two preludes performed at Chopin's funeral. At the time just I wanted one that was not too hard, but still pretty.
<p>Also, if you're a musician, I highly recommend watching <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M33cRNx3ohI">4 chords</a>, where the author goes into a lot of theory about the piece.</p></td></tr>

Moonlight Sonata with Improvisationhttp://www.glassray.com/posts/moonlight/2021-02-02T05:34:13Z2020-03-24T02:31:35Z
<h3>Moonlight Sonata Plus</h3>
<table><tr><td>Title</td><td>Moonlight Sonata, First Movement</td></tr>
<tr><td>Composer</td><td><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig%20van%20Beethoven">Ludwig van Beethoven</a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Genre</td><td>Classical</td></tr>
<tr><td>Instrument</td><td>Purchased samples of a Malmsjo 275 cm (9 foot) Grand Piano, and <a href="https://linuxsampler.org">LinuxSampler</a></td></tr>

<tr><td>Comment</td><td>Eons ago, when I was in college, thanks to one of my sisters, our
family was able to retrieve Mom's upright piano (a long story). At
the time I had also seen a commercial on TV featuring a girl playing
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. I liked the piece enough that I learned
it. So I memorized it by finding each note from the score and playing
each measure repeatedly, really upsetting at least one of my sisters.
<p>
Though I thought it sounded nice, when I did finally take lessons, my
teacher didn't think I was ready for the piece, so wouldn't include it
in my lessons.
</p><p>
Decades later, I got back to the piano, trying to learn sight reading.
This is what I came up with. It was recorded with a keyboard and
sampler on the computer. Just the samples require about 5GB of
storage. Lest you think I just played this through, let me say that
I've had to make numerous edits to the performance at the midi level,
when I turned pages for example, in order to make it sound OK.</p></td></tr>

<tr><td>Comment</td><td>Now, back in college when I could play this by memory, one of our
neighbors who was a singer came over to a party we were throwing.
When she heard me playing it, she sang along, improvising some of the
melody. It was amazing. I've tried here to recreate that experience,
using a keyboard with oboe and choir sounds. It really surprised me
what resulted, although you classical puritans may not enjoy it as
much as me. It still has a couple mistakes that I couldn't correct,
but I'm posting it anyway.
<p>
Oh yeah, the other reason I did this was to try to convince an actual
singer, say <a href="http://www.glassray.com/posts/Hayley_Westenra/">Hayley Westenra</a> to produce something similar. Can't
say I've had success on that front, although I did email her about it
once.</p></td></tr>

Chopin Nocturne 20 in C-sharp minorhttp://www.glassray.com/posts/Chopin_Nocturne_20_in_C-sharp_minor/2021-07-10T04:29:47Z2016-12-16T20:22:09Z
<h1><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocturne%20in%20C%2Dsharp%20minor%2C%20Op%2E%20posth%2E%20%28Chopin%29">Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Op. posth. (Chopin)</a></h1>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM9mb1cUsHQ&t=5m10s"><img alt="Youtube video !RM9mb1cUsHQ" src="https://img.youtube.com/vi/RM9mb1cUsHQ/default.jpg" /></a></p>
<p>This video has Natalya Romaniw singing against the beginning of
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric%20Chopin">Frédéric Chopin</a>'s Nocturne op9 no1. She sounds
wonderful! So I went looking for more. As often happens during an
Internet search, one often finds something else, similar but also
great, and this time I wanted to share the reference.</p>
<p>I (re)discovered the piece arranged for violin and piano. I say
rediscovered since, according to the Wikipedia page, the piece has
been used several times in popular media, so I've likely heard it, but
somehow it didn't register until now.</p>
<p>I highly recommend listening to this piece at once, and Youtube has
several to choose from. Here's one:</p>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHex-NcqX6c"><img alt="Youtube video !oHex-NcqX6c" src="https://img.youtube.com/vi/oHex-NcqX6c/default.jpg" /></a></p>
<p>An arrangement by
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan%5FMilstein">Nathan Milstein</a>,
whom I had not heard of until now. Hey wait, you can even hear him play:</p>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUNmb_bXNSE"><img alt="Youtube video !IUNmb_bXNSE" src="https://img.youtube.com/vi/IUNmb_bXNSE/default.jpg" /></a></p>
<p>Hopefully you were able to make it back here. Not sure I could have
as I literally had to listen to these over and over, and i don't even
like solo violin that much. Usually, I prefer my violins safely
contained in the string section of an orchestra, however this was a
rather tas te-shaping experience for me. Hopefully you'll enjoy these
as much as I do.</p>
<p>If you wish to hear the piece as originally composed by Chopin for
piano only, you should be able to do so from the Wikipedia page linked
above. Or, listen to <span class="createlink"><a href="http://www.glassray.com/cgi-bin/ikiwiki.cgi?do=create&from=posts%2FChopin_Nocturne_20_in_C-sharp_minor&page=Valentina_Lisitsa" rel="nofollow">?</a>Valentina Lisitsa</span>'s rendition:</p>

<p>Sheet music <a href="http://imslp.org/wiki/Nocturne_in_C-sharp_minor,_B.49_%28Chopin,_Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric%29">here</a>.</p>

This page contains some music that I haven't had much time to classify for purposes of this web. Most of these performers really deserve pages of their own.

It and someday more will be at <a href="https://soundcloud.com/jascottw">SoundCloud</a>.</p>
